10 Reasons Parents in Texas Are Choosing Microschools Over Traditional Private Schools

In recent years, microschools have gained popularity as an innovative alternative to traditional private schools. With their personalized approach, flexible structures, and focus on holistic development, microschools are redefining education for families across Texas. Here are the top 10 reasons why parents are making the switch:

1. Personalized Attention

Microschools often feature small class sizes, allowing teachers to focus on each student’s unique needs and learning style. This individualized attention helps students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.

2. Innovative Learning Models

Microschools embrace modern teaching methods, such as project-based learning and real-world problem-solving. These approaches foster critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration—skills that prepare students for future success.

ParagonED uses real-world scenarios to gauge student learning.  We have a school podcast that is a mix of staff and students showcasing upcoming events within ParagonED and methods to verify mastery. To hear an example, check out our student-led podcast by some of our middle schoolers were they shared information on wildfires from their science class.

3. Flexibility in Curriculum

Unlike traditional private schools, microschools can tailor their curriculum to suit the needs and interests of their students. This flexibility allows for a more engaging and relevant educational experience.

Here at ParagonED, we realized that our 7th grade students loved learning guitar and as such, we have built learning modules where they are able to work on their music together with a crescendo where two of them played a duet in our end of year Christmas Chapel for parents, grandparents, community members, and their student peers.

4. Focus on Life Skills

Microschools emphasize practical life skills, from financial literacy to communication and teamwork. These skills equip students to navigate real-world challenges with confidence.  Our student especially love Young Chef Academy days where they learn food handling skills, food preparation techniques, and appropriate taste/seasoning.

5. Stronger Parent-Teacher Relationships

With fewer students per teacher, microschools foster stronger relationships between educators and families. Parents are more involved in their child’s education, leading to a supportive and collaborative learning environment.  Our goal here at ParagonED is to really put the parent back in the driver’s seat of their student’s education.

6. Cost-Effective Alternatives

Microschools are often more affordable than traditional private schools, making high-quality education accessible to more families. Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) (hopefully coming to Texas in 2025) can further reduce costs, enabling parents to make the best choice for their children.

7. Community-Oriented Environment

Microschools create a close-knit community where students, parents, and teachers work together to build a supportive atmosphere. This sense of belonging enhances students’ social and emotional development.

8. Emphasis on Core Values

Many microschools, like ParagonED, prioritize instilling strong values and character development. This focus ensures students grow into well-rounded individuals grounded in principles such as integrity, compassion, and responsibility.

9. Customized Pace and Structure

Microschools allow students to learn at their own pace, whether they need additional support or are ready to advance beyond their grade level. This customized approach reduces stress and fosters a love for learning.

10. Preparation for the Future

By emphasizing critical life skills, business experience, and a strong ethical foundation, microschools prepare students for success beyond the classroom. Parents appreciate that their children graduate ready to excel in college, careers, and life.

Some of the ways we prepare students for the future is finding areas and activities they love and then creating pathways for them to dive deeper into those topics through partnerships.  One such partnership is iCode, who is also our building-mate.  To learn more about iCode and how they prepare students for their future in technology jobs, check out our recent podcast with the Frisco East Director.
